Cost of Nursing Homes

Don't let the numbers scare you. Most already know that nursing homes aren't cheap, but the cost of nursing home care depends on many things. Length of stay, location and size of the room all play into the nursing home cost of care. According to Genworth Financial, in 2016 the average cost of a semi-private room was $6,844. One third of all nursing home residents pay for the expense of a nursing home themselves, but most expend their Medicaid benefits.

How are Nursing Home Costs Paid For?

Any kind of advanced nursing care comes with a price and it's a pretty heavy one. There are many different ways seniors pay for nursing home facilities without the fear of not being able to afford care. For those who only need care for a short period of time, Medicare is your go to. Medicare will cover up to 100 days of care at a Medicare-certified nursing home. You can use the Medicare Nursing Home Compare website to find a covered nursing home.

Medicaid is another government program that is highly utilized to pay for long term care in nursing homes and other skilled care. Typically at least 40% of the cost of a nursing home is covered through Medicaid. This sounds great, but to qualify for this program the applicant needs to show financial need.

Nursing home insurance or long term care insurance is yet another option for seniors when it comes to paying for a skilled facility. Residents who don't qualify for an assistance program could look into purchasing insurance that fully covers nursing home costs.

Services Offered in Nursing Homes

Not every nursing home is the same. From facility to facility you might find that some offer services that others do not. For the most part every quality facility has these basic services:

  • Room and Board (semi-private or private rooms)
  • 24 Hour Supervision by nurses, doctors and licensed professionals
  • Meals matched to the individual's nutritional needs
  • Social activities
  • Health services such as therapy, personal care and pain management

Some facilities provide even more services to fit the needs of the resident at an additional cost. When looking for a home it's important to know what additional services are offered so that you can find the right facility.

Finding the Right Nursing Home

To avoid waiting lists and other hurdles when it comes to choosing a nursing home, it definitely helps to do your research. It pays to know ahead of time what you or your loved one needs so that the list of potential options can be narrowed down. While you are touring nursing homes ask yourself questions about the staff, environment and the quality of care.

Common Problems in Nursing Homes

Just like with any facility, there are many different problems that you might run into. While searching for the best nursing home, make sure you are aware of common issues and do everything you can to prevent them by picking a quality facility.

Within nursing homes, many residents and their families complain of being excluded from planning care. To avoid this issue you need to look for a nursing home that values the opinion of the resident and their family members. By law, a resident and their family have a right to help make decisions when it comes to the care of the resident.

Another problem residents face is their preferences being dismissed. In a nursing home you should be able to bathe when you would like. Some nursing homes see the benefit of resident centered care while others still lag behind.

Families sometimes complain of nursing home abuse and neglect regarding the care of their family member. This concerns everything from inappropriate use of restraints to failure to feed the resident. Lawsuits are increasing when it comes to improperly or poorly caring for residents.
