Features of Assisted Living Homes & Centers
Assisted living homes provide a wide range of help and services depending on the needs of the individual resident. At the bare minimum, assisted living homes provide a safe living environment that includes features designed for those who are aging, such as medical alert systems and bathroom railings.
These facilities can also provide options for housekeeping, meal services, and transportation to help make daily life easier without robbing the resident of their true access to independence. Though, many centers also provide kitchens in apartments to provide the option of cooking on their own.
The biggest pull for many seniors living on their own is that of socialization. Many of those who drag their feet when entering the facility complain about the idea of communal living. Yet, many of those same people find that the social aspect of assisted living centers provides an opportunity to thrive socially.
Many centers will put on regular structured social events and encourage independent socialization that can go quite a bit further than a resident may have gone in their own home.
Cost of Assisted Living In Pittsburgh PA
According to Genworth, the average monthly cost of an assisted living facility in Pittsburgh is $3,600. This is less than half the price of the average cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home, which comes in at an average cost of $8,821.
Is It Time for Assisted Living?
The time for assisted living doesn’t arrive at a certain age. In fact, people in their 40s and 50s embrace assisted living if it suits their needs.
There are several things to consider before encouraging a move into a home:
- Are they safe in their current home? Do they have the tools in place to go to the bathroom, go up and down stairs, or use the kitchen safely while unsupervised?
- Are their care needs escalating? Do they need something beyond what family members can physically provide?
